Mercy is a young law student from Los Angeles, having come over for a few weeks for study and photo shoots. She has such an intense, passionate look in front of the camera which in turn dominates the image. She is one of those rare models who require no direction whatsoever and it is best to just give them a concept and get out of their way. Let them act in front of you, take on the personality of what you want to capture and allow them to do their thing.Lighting
When working with models who have dark skin, especially black models, lighting takes on a whole new meaning. Shadows take on a new role fall differently on the skin, allowing for a softer contrast that, even with harsh lighting, looks natural.
This shot was lit with a beauty dish only, turned up as high as I could get it so that it actually fizzed every time it was fired. I positioned it quite low to the floor, about 4-5 feet from the ground and positioned to the right of me by about 8 feet. Thats what causes the harsh shadow on the wall behind her, lighting from a single direction. If Id have added a second light, that shadow would have lost its pop.Processing
Added a slight blue tint to the shadows and a yellow tint to the highlights.

Do you know that its actually possible to work with somebody too pretty? This is Elizabeth and when I met her today, I was certain that I wouldnt get a single shot that was as pretty as she actually is. She is 19 years old and has such natural beauty that she comes pre-Photoshopped and in all honesty, it makes life harder! Some models you look at and you know what will suit them, what wont, and you work to that. You hide their flaws, you emphasise their beauty and you bring out the best of them and afterwards, you can look back and feel proud of yourself. With Elizabeth, it doesnt matter what angle you shoot, what f-stop, what lighting - she looks perfect, and I dont like that :). The other annoying thing to consider is she isnt even a model, she is a make-up artist!!!Lighting
Boudoir scenes are very limited in how they can be set up, as you have to make the light soft and as close to natural light as possible. Therefore, softboxes are the only real choice and because you do not want much shadow, you have to use two. This setup is done using a softbox just to my right, acting as the fill light (simply to lift shadow that would fall on her breasts and the outside of her legs) and a key soft box light directly to the left of the image. This illuminates the scene primarily. Both are above her and angle down so they illuminate the scene as if the light was coming from the same angle as a window.Processing
None to be honest. I ever so slightly blurred the background as I was limited for dof shooting at f8.Links to More Photos

Let me introduce you to every photographers dream. Now, before you start to think that I have a massive crush on this girl, let me explain. Yes, she is beautiful and a great model, but she works for Nikon! And, she gets 50% off all Nikon equipment. Thats 50% off! Can you just imagine it. Coming home to her, walking through the door and she says “I brought home the new D4 and the latest lenses, fancy doing some boudoir stuff? Its like camera porn! So yes, its official, Im in love :).
Seriously though, she is a great model. She has this look of curiously, sultry suspicion that is evident in all of her photos. Perhaps she was onto the fact that I just wanted the discount :).
Many more to come.
